Peter Hills Church of England School

TEAMWE (Year 5/6)

We follow the statutory scheme of work set by the government, and personalise the Peter Hills curriculum to ensure the learning is engaging, fun and relevant to the children. All activities are pitched at varying levels to cover the year 5 and 6 objectives. There will be plenty of opportunities for the children to be challenged and pushed so they meet their full potential.

SATs form part of this important year for our Year 6s. These assessments are taken in May and will determine whether a child has met the 'expected' level in English and Maths. This will help teachers support your child’s learning in future schools, and form part of your child’s learning profile as we consider their learning in class and social development. The Year 6s will have the opportunity to practise lots in small focused groups, in particular with Mrs Curtis, who has had many years of experience with preparing children and ensuring they are ready.

There is a wide range of expectations for the children in both Reading, Writing and Maths. Kagan Cooperative Learning is used across the school and we maintain this method in Year 5/6 as it is exciting, fast paced and ensures all children are participating. There will be plenty of opportunities for fun class trips with the whole class, and a very exciting residential trip for Year 6 in the Summer Term!

An important part of our learning this year will include Life Skills and Confidence Club for Year 6. As the oldest class in the school, we look at things children may encounter across the next few years as they become more independent, and how to approach these different issues (such as social media use, travelling around London and healthy choices). These sessions will be at lunch time, and will be a safe space for the children to ask different questions to Mrs Esterhuizen and other members of staff throughout the year. As a proud Church of England school, RE will be consistently focused upon each week, with the children taking part in a daily worship and weekly RE lessons.

We cannot wait to learn more, have more fun and have an extremely positive year full of good times and even better memories.
